St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield, Wisconsin, 1923

Mr. Kraus was born in Calumet county on March 22, 1874. He lived in Chilton as a young man and then moved to Marshfield where he operated a clothing store with his brother, M. J. Kraus, for a few years. He came to Colby 50 years ago and went into partnership with the late G. C. Kersten and the two operated a general store for 30 years. He was married on September 3, 1912, at Colby to the former Josephine Frane who survives him.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church, and, until three years ago, he was a member of the church choir. For 40 years, he served as director of the Catholic cemetery. He was active in the Catholic Order of Foresters and served as financial secretary for many years. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society. Mr. Kraus was of a kindly, friendly and obliging disposition so friendship’s circle to him was a large one. Many will miss his kindly and friendly greetings.

Surviving, besides his widow, are four daughters - Mrs. Stanley (Catherine) Morales of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Alois (Bernadette) Gabriel of Colby, Mrs. Douglas (Beatrice) Rifleman of Edgar, Mrs. Sal E. (Dorothy) Zavala of Riverside, Calif. - and 17 grand children. One son, Hubert, two brothers and five sisters.

Pall bearers were John, David, Dennis, Howard, Charles and Donald Frane, all nephews. Flower girls were Ruth Ann, Carol Jean, Jeannette, Mary Jane and Waverlee Frane, all nieces. Sisters of St. Mary’s School sang with Sister Louise Ann at the organ.
