Reas, George Berten (13 Apr. 1861 - 1942)

Word was received in Spencer Thursday Evening of the death of George Berten Reas, aged 81, one of the oldest members of the Modern Woodman of America Lodge in Spencer and one of the oldest residents in Spencer in number of years, Mr. Reas died at an Ashland hospital last Thursday evening at 5 o'clock. Mr. Reas, oldest son of Geo. and Elizabeth Reas, was born April 13, 1861, in Berlin, Wis. The family came to Spencer in 1873, and for 69 years Mr. Reas worked in logging camps and mills in and around Spencer. He was married Oct. 13, 1883, in Spencer to Rose Taylor who preceded him in death, July 1, 1934. Surviving are seven children, Mrs. Paul (Ora) Schaefer and Mrs. Bert (Myrtle) Young, both of Spencer, Guy Reas of Park Falls; John Reas of Wild Rose; Mrs. Herman (Blanche) Metzger of Spencer; Earl Reas of Mellen, and Mrs. Karl (Margaret) Wisotzke of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A daughter, Cora died in infancy. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren 14 great grandchildren, and four brothers, Ed of Park Falls; Fred and Henry of Spencer and Perley of Marengo.

Funeral services for Mr. Reas were held at the Swarthout Funeral Home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. Ellery J. Beal pastor of the Methodist church in charge of the services. Interment was made in the Spencer cemetery. Pall bearers were Harry Bodle, Bert Baldwin, Bert Andrews, Spence Graves, Harley Graves and Laurence Driscoll. In charge of flowers were Mrs. L. Driscoll, Mrs. W. W. Clark, Mrs. G. W. Holterman, Mrs. M. Engle, Mrs. S. E. Graves and Mrs. F. C. Corbett.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Teeters and son, Leo, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Teeters, Ed. Reas and daughter, Mrs. Verna Fritsch, Mrs. Callie Ziebelt and Guy Reas of Park Falls; John Campbell of Bay City, Wi. and Ear Campbell of Drummond; Mr. and Mrs. Perley Reas and Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Reas of Marengo; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Reas and children, Ralph, Ramona and Earl Jr. and Mrs. Padolla of Mellon; Mr. and Mrs. John Reas and children, Bruce and Bonny Jean of Wild Rose; Mrs. Margaret Wisotzke of Milwaukee; Mrs. Viola Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Melford Krubsack of Marshfield: Mr. and Mrs. John Peters of Wisconsin Rapids and Mrs. Ed. Telschow of Stratford.
