COLBY -- John E. Goodwin, 62, of Colby, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, in the Palliative Care Unit at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services are pending. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home of Abbotsford is assisting the family with arrangements.

COLBY -- John E. Goodwin, 62, of Colby passed away peacefully at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield after a courageous fight with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colby, Wis. Father Anandran Rajendran will officiate. Burial and Military Rites will immediately follow the mass at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in the town of Colby, Wis. Acting as his pallbearers are John Kuranda, Bob Ashley, Dan Ashley, Damon Goodwin, Derek Miller and Brandon Miller.

Visitation will be held Thursday at the church in Colby from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services.

The Maurina Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford is assisting the family with arrangements.

John was born to Edward and Ida (Elpert) Goodwin on Feb. 4, 1946, in Chicago. He attended grade school in Oconomowoc and high school in Colby and Loyal. After graduation, he entered the Marine Corp in 1965 and served his country until 1967. He served in the Vietnam War and was awarded a Purple Heart. On May 28, 1966, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Theresa Kuranda. John was employed by International Harvester in Chicago. In 1976, John and Theresa moved their family to Colby, Wis.

John was a lifetime member of the VFW Colby Post 2227 and St. Mary's Catholic Church. He served a two-year term as an alderman for the city of Colby, Wis. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on old cars, and collecting International Tractors. He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers. Many family memories were made at the Green Lake cottage.

John is lovingly survived by his wife, Theresa; his two sons, Ken (Jill) Goodwin of Edgar and Joe (Jill) Goodwin of Spencer. He was the proud grandpa of Kelsey, Kaylee, Kassie, Kaden, Jenna, Jared and Jayden. He is further survived by his sister, Janis (Al) Miller of Loyal; and one brother, Dale (Cathi) Goodwin of Loyal.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He will be sadly missed by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
