Brown, Herbert Lee (19 April 1888 - 22 March 1971)

Masonic rites for Herbert Lee Brown, 82, of Neillsville, who died at his home March 22, were held Wednesday, March 24, at 2 p.m. from the Georgas Funeral Home. Milo Mabie officiated and burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Herbert Brown, the son of Henry W. and Catherine (Selves) Brown, was born April 19, 1888, in Neillsville, where he received his early education. A graduate of Neillsville High School, he worked for the late Henry W. Klopf in the jewelry store while a high school student. Following graduation from the Northwest College of Commerce he worked for the late Atty. R. B. Salter of Colby.

Mr. Brown also worked at the First National Bank, and was Neillsville City Clerk under Mayor S. F. Hewett. He and his cousin Frank Brown operated a jewelry store here for several years. He served as Clark County Coroner for several terms, and was administrator of the former Neillsville Hospital at the time it became known as Memorial Hospital. He retired in 1954.

Mr. Brown was a member of Neillsville Lodge No. 163, F & AM, Neillsville Chapter No. 66 Royal Arch Masons, Neillsville Commandery No. 36, Knights Templar, and of the Zor Shrine at Madison.

His first marriage, to the former Florence M. Wilding, took place in Neillsville on October 8, 1913. She died in 1937. He was married to the former Hazel Lee in Waukon, Ia., in 1938.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Walter (Buster) Brown of Neillsville; two grandchildren: Dennis Brown of Sun Prairie and Wayne Brown of Hudson; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Herbert L. Brown, 82, of Neillsville, who died March 22, were held Wednesday, March 24, at 2 p.m. from the Georgas Funeral Home. Masonic rites were conducted by Milo Mabie and burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers for Mr. Brown were: Melnard Hansen, Francis Laatch, Herb Smith, Harold Trewartha, Kenneth Short, and LeRoy John. Organ music was provided by Mrs. Jess W. Scott.

People from out-of-town who attended the services included: Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Brown and family of Sun Prairie, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Brown and family of Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gault of Wausau, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Selves of Alma Center, Mr. and Mrs. Melnard Hansen of Greenwood, Mrs. Lucien Moh, Miss Linda Moh, and William Vine of Granton. Members of the Masonic Lodge attended in a body.
