Schroeder, Adolf (12 FEB 1886 - 21 JAN 1949)

Adolf Schroder, son of the late Martin and Charlotte Schroder, was born in the Town of Longwood (Clark Co.), Wis., Feb. 12, 1886. He attended public school here and received religious training at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in the Town of Green Grove, and assisting with work on his parent’s farm during his youth.

His early manhood was spent in working in the logging industry in Wisconsin and Canadian forests. He left for California at the time of the earthquake, about 1906, where he spent some time in cleaning up and rebuilding operations in Sand Francisco. And later at the lumbering trade in the west. Soon returning to this community where he spent the remainder of his active life developing and operating his farm, on which he lived until he suffered a stroke of apoplexy early in the summer of 1948. After this time he lived with a brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meyer in Reedsburg, and later with another brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Reinhart Wilkens of this vicinity.

He suffered another stroke about two weeks ago, gradually failing in strength and passing away at two o’clock Friday afternoon, Jan. 21, 1949. He was 62 years, 11 months and 9 days of age.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Frank, and a brother Max, and his twin sister who passed away in infancy.

Surviving are three brothers and four sisters, Fred and Carl of Oregon, Ernest of Wis. Rapids, Wis., Mrs. Henry Meyer of Reedsburg, Wis., Mrs. Clara Due of Downey, Calif., Mrs. Lottie Birdall of Detroit, Mich. And Mrs. Mary Wilkens of Owen, with whom he resided at the time of his death.

Funeral services were conducted on Jan. 24th at two o’clock from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin) with Rev. W. Myron Glick officiating. During the services Clark Nissen sang, "In the Garden" and "Abide with Me," accompanied on the piano by Miss Zivney.

Burial was made in the family lot in the Green Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Arnold Bare, Vencle Kaucinik, W. R. Spencer, Wm. Awe, Herman Awe and Arthur Awe.

Adolf was among the few remaining pioneers of this vicinity and his passing reminds us of the poet’s words:

As Life runs on the road grows strange

With faces ne and near the end

The milestone into headstone change

Neath everyone a friend.
