Oates, Helen (26 FEB 1949)

The Holy Rosary Rectory, Owen, was the scene of a pretty wedding at 11 o’clock Saturday morning, Feb. 26th, 1949, when Miss Helen Oates of Marshfield and Clarence Mertens of Withee (Clark Co., Wis.) were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. The Rev. Raymond Bornbach officiated.

A peach colored gown with brown accessories was worn by the bride. Her shoulder corsage consisted of white roses.

Miss Imogene Knaack of Owen was bridesmaid. She wore a green gown with black accessories and a should corsage of pink and white carnations. Both the bride and the bridesmaid wore a gold cross and chain, a gift of the groom.

The groom wore a brown suit. Eugene Mertens, cousin of the groom, was best man. He also wore a brown suit similar to that of the groom’s.

At noon a dinner was served to immediate relatives and the bridal party. In the evening a number of friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mertens, parents of the groom, to wish the couple a long happy wedded life. The newlyweds were the happy recipients of many lovely and useful gifts.

They will make their future home on a farm near Withee.

Out of town guests at the service were: Mrs. Virgil Oates and daughter Beulah of Marshfield, mother and sister of the bride, and Miss Mary Mertens, Milwaukee, sister of the groom.
