Mertens, Inez (11 JUN 1949)

At the First Congregational Church in Owen, Miss Inez Mertens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Mertens, Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), became the bride of William A. Nourse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Nourse, Withee, at two-thirty o’clock, Saturday, June 11th, 1949.

The Rev. Myron Glick officiated at the marriage ceremony.

Mrs. Wm. Catura Jr., served as her sister’s maid of honor, and bridesmaids were Mrs. Earl Miller, sister of the groom and Miss Eva Jean Lang, cousins of the bride.

Attending the bridegroom as best man was William Catura, Jr., and groomsmen Keith Mertens, brother of the bride, and Earl Miller, brother-in-law of the groom. Ushers were Eugene Mertens and Loren Miller.

The bride approached the altar of the church, which was beautifully decorated with summer flowers, on the arm of her father who gave her in marriage at the lovely double ring ceremony.

During the ceremony, soloist, Mary Lois Stewart, cousin of the bride, sang "I Love You Truly" and "The Lord’s Prayer." She was accompanied by Joyce Stewart.

The bride wore an unusual beautiful gown of nylon illusion with a portrait neckline and long shirred sleeves. The entire full skirt and train had tier upon tier of nylon illusion ruffles. A bonnet effect crown with orange blossoms and seed pearls and a shoulder length veil completed the attire. Her jewelry was a gift from the groom, an all around rhinestone necklace with aqua stones.

Her attendants wore attractive gowns of orchid, Nile green and yellow, made of rayon marquisette with self yoke, bertha collars, puffed sleeves and matching gloves. The gowns also had flared peplum which fell into a double row of shirred ruffles down the back of the very full skirts. Each wore matching picture hats. They carried bouquets of red roses below a net fan of white net edged with satin ribbon and streamers to match their dresses. The bride’s bouquet was calla lilies centered with red roses and showers.

Susan Mertens, cousin of the bride, was the flower girl. She wore a dress of white organdy styled identically to those of the bridesmaids and wore a bonnet veil similar to that of the bride’s.

Following the ceremony a dinner was served at the Community Hall. The dining hall was appropriately decorated for the happy occasion with baskets of flowers as were the tables which were decorated with colorful decoration following the colors of the bridesmaids’ dresses. A beautiful three tier wedding cake separated by pillars of glass toped with large bells made a lovely centerpiece at the bridal party’s table.

The bride is a graduate of the Withee High School and the Molar Barber College in Minneapolis. He is now employed as a barber in Thorp. The young couple will reside in this community following their return from a honeymoon trip through northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Among the guests attending the wedding ceremony were: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Nourse and family of Sheboygan; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sorenson, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Regorrah, Hayward; Mr. and Mrs. Orville Natzke and family, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Gandt of Marshfield; Mrs. Clarence Poppe, Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Stewart and family, greenwood; Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Lang, Unity; Keith Mertens, Chicago; Eva Jean Lang, Madison and Tom Nourse, Sheboygan.
