Zelm, Edwin R. (26 JUL 1908 - 3 JAN 1950)

Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon for Edwin R. Zelm, 41, widely known Longwood (Clark Co., Wis.) cheese maker, who died early Tuesday, Jan. 3rd, 1950, at the Wis. General Hospital in Madison.

Rites will be conducted from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin), Owen, at 1 p.m. and at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Withee, at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Walter Schedler officiating. Burial will be made in Riverside Cemetery.

Mr. Zelm, who was vice president of the Clark County Quality Milk Association and director of the Central Wisconsin Chessemakers’ and Buttermakers’ Association, had been in ill health since last August.

He had been a patient in several hospitals since Sept. 1 and had been a Madison for two weeks at the time of his death.

Born at Plymouth on July 26, 1908, he moved to Tony with his parents while still a child and received his grade school education there. Later his parents moved to this area and he attended Owen High School, where he was valedictorian of his class.

He was married at Chicago on April 24, 1934, to Miss Florence Frederick of Withee.

Upon the death of his father, the late William Zelm, when he was 18, he had taken over the operation of the Longwood Cheese Factory for his mother, and a few years ago he purchased the business from her.

In addition to his membership in dairy organizations he was a member of the Mens Club of St. John’s Church, Withee, and had been a member of the board of the Longwood school district.

He is survived by his wife and his mother and five children, Allen, 14, Merlin 11, Gerald, 8, Kenneth, 5, and Carol, 2. A sister, Mrs. Gerhardt (Adeline) Gosse, Riplinger, and two brothers, Arnold of Bruce and Ervin of Longwood, also survived; one brother Roland, died in boyhood.
