Murphy, Dean V. #2 (21 JUN 1922 - 16 MAR 2009)

Dean V. Murphy, 86, Marshall, Ill., passed away on Monday, March 16, 2009, at Greenwood Health and Living, Greenwood, Ind. Burial took place at 10 a.m., on Monday March 23, at Willard Cemetery, Willard. Military rites were conducted by the Greenwood American Legion Post #238.

Dean Verlin Murphy was born on June 21, 1922, in Marshall, Ill., to Leary and Orpha May (Martin) Murphy. He was raised and received his education in Marshall, graduating from Marshall High School. After graduation from high school, he served in the U.S. Navy for five years, from 1942-47 when he was discharged with the rank of aviation chief machinist’s mate. He then went to college and received his bachelor of science degree from Bradley University, Peoria, Ill., and his master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University. He married Frances Herrick on Oct. 18, 1947, in Peoria, Ill. She preceded him in death on Nov. 23, 2006. His teaching career began in Boston, Ill., and Orion, Ill., where he was also football coach. In 1954, he returned to Marshall, Ill., where he taught industrial arts for several years prior for three years as principal of Marshall Junior High. He later served as principal at the high school in Herscher, Ill., for nine years before retiring in 1977 and moving back to Marshall. He served as the superintendent of Welfare for Clark County, Ill., for three years, was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W., and was a member of the Lions. He was a generous giver to many organizations.

Survivors include two daughters, Lorre (Al) Chapman, Greenwood, Ind., and Sheila Robinson, Martinsville, Ill.; one son, Bob (Carolyn) Murphy, Martinsville, Ill.; one sister, Virgie Pearce, Marshall, Ill.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren on the way.
