Johnson, Clayton (24 May 1866 - 11 May 1942)

Clayton Johnson, age 76, a resident of Colby for the past 60 years, was instantly killed at about 11 o’clock Monday night when he was struck by an auto driven by Arnold Edblom, 27, of Unity, on Highway 13.

The accident occurred opposite the Edward Witte service station, and Edblom, who was accompanied by his brother, Arthur, 17, said the aged man was walking in the middle of the west half of the pavement.

Visibility was poor because of the rain, but Coroner H. H. Fechtner of Marathon county, who with Officers Frank Nienow and George Cook, investigated the accident, said Edblom stopped his car within seven feet after applying the brakes.

Johnson, who lived in the city, was walking north on his way home, and the Edblom brothers were traveling south toward Unity, Wis.

Cause of the pedestrian’s death was a crushed chest.

Born in Calumet county on May 24, 1866, Johnson came to this area with his parents, full-blooded Indians, who were among the early settlers here, about 60 years ago. He worked as a lather and shingler, and in his younger days was well known as a baseball player and umpire, and as a musician in the community band.

He was married to Isabel Graham of the town of Hull, Wisconsin, who died 34 years ago.

Surviving are a son, Oscar, Racine; a daughter, Mrs. Cecelia Burt, Rockford, Ill.; three grand children and a great grand child; a brother, Bert, of Eau Claire; and a sister, Miss Harriet Johnson, who is a teacher at Kenosha.

Funeral services were held this morning at 10:30 o’clock at the Lulloff funeral home and burial was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. The Rev. A. C. Riley of the Methodist church was the officiating clergyman.
