Zell, John (29 June 1876 - 9 June 1944)

Funeral services for John Zell, 67, pioneer resident of the town of Johnson, who died Friday at 6:00 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arno Kallien, were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed church at Milan, with the Rev. W. H. Ortwein officiating. Internment was made at the cemetery at Milan, beside his wife, who preceded him in death 13 years ago.

At the church services, Mrs. Albert Fasse and her daughter, Shirley, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Rock of Ages," and "Asleep in Jesus."

Mr. Zell was born June 29, 1876, in Milwaukee and at the age of 14 years came to the town of Johnson with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zell. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Schuster at Abbotsford, July 11, 1900.

Mr. Zell was actively engaged in farming one and one half miles south of Milan until about three years ago when he underwent an operation. After that he continued farming, with help, until a little more than a year ago, when, on account of ill health, he sold the personal property.

He was a charter member of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed church, Milan, and assisted in building it and also acted as president of the congregation for many years.

Pallbearers at the funeral services were M. C. Ellingson, F. F. Marquardt, John Schreiber, Fred Laabs, Henry Ewan and William Brunner. Flower bearers were Wilma Marquardt, Carmelita Schreiber, Shirley Fasse, Dorothy Ewan, Dolores Brunner and Mercedes Heindl.

Surviving are three children, Mrs. Carl (Henrietta) Goldammer, Filmore, Mrs. Frank (Marguerite) Haderlein, and Mrs. Arnold (Esther) Kallien, town of Johnson, four grand children, all present at the funeral; three brothers, Herman, Marshfield; Edward, Milwaukee; Charles, Kenosha; one sister, Mrs. Mary Choate, Cooper, South Dak.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Goldammer and family, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Goldammer, Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Degnitz, Fillmore; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Otto, Sussex; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ortmann, Sharon; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Zell, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Zell, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bell, Marshfield; Lavern Zell, Zanesville, Reinhold Ortmann, Dousman; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Zell and Mrs. Albert Klatt, Milwaukee; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Zell, Kenosha.
