Manthe, Hazel (23 Aug. 1922 - 23 Apr. 1999)

Spencer, Wis. - Hazel Manthe, 76, died April 23, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, at Community Funeral Home. The Rev. David Ault will officiate.

Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in North Spencer. Pallbearers will be Ronald Manthe Jr., Norbert Manthe, Roberth Manthe, Benjamin Manthe, Kris Decorah, Keith Decorah, Kelvin Decorah and Kelly (Bucky) Decorah.

Vistitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and again until service time Monday, both at the funeral home.

Hazel was born Aug. 23, 1922, in the town of Sherman, Clark County, to Benjamin and Myra (nee Cole) Vanderhoof. She received her education in the town of Sherman.

Hazel and Valerious Manthe were married Sept. 10, 1942, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in North Spencer. The couple lived in Marshfield. Hazel worked at the Egg Plant Factory for two years and Bloome Box Factory in Riplinger for three years. They then bought a farm in the town of Unity, rural Spencer, and farmed for 29 years.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Hazel is survived by her children, Ronald (Loren) Manthe of Loyal, Cecelia (Michael) VanLanen of Sobeski, Judy Wagner of Stratford, Jerry Manthe of Spencer and Charles (Terri) Manthe of Spencer; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her brothers and sisters, Dorothy Lawrence of Marshfield, Gracy Bryda of Marshfield, Esther Gauthier of Rhinelander, Viola Walti of Rhinelander, Blanche Lawrence of Chicago, Edna Shimek of Brillion, and Charles (Ruth) Vanderhoof and Archie (Nila) Vanderhoof, all of Arpin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Valerious, on Oct. 23, 1970; her parents; two sisters, Jean Miller and Mable Roggensach; one brother, Earl Vanderhoof; a granddaughter, Linda Marie Manthe; and a son-in-law, Michael Wagner.
