Schmitt, John (12 Nov. 1862 - 4 Oct. 1946)

A requiem high mass was read Tuesday morning at 9:00 o’clock at St. Louis’ Catholic church, Dorchester for John Schmitt, 83, who died of a stroke at midnight Friday at his home at Dorchester, Wis. The Rev. P. T. Weller had charge of the rites and burial was made in Hillside cemetery, Marshfield.

Mr. Schmitt was born at Kewaskum Nov. 12, 1862, and was married to Margaret Fuchs, April 28, 1883, at St. Mary’s Catholic church at Marathon.

He spent his early life in the Marshfield community, where he received his education. Before moving to Dorchester in 1914 he served as sheriff of Wood county from 1910 to 1912. He was known in Medford, where he operated a brewery for several years prior to 1910.

When he and his family moved to Dorchester in 1914, Mr. Schmitt purchased the Star hotel, which he operated for five years before having it remodeled into a store. He was highway commissioner for three years and served on the Clark County Board of Supervisors, being a member of the road and bridge committee for a number of years.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmitt made their home in Abbotsford for several years, while their daughter, Miss Tillie Schmitt, operated a store here.

Surviving are his wife and four daughters, Mathilda, at home; Mrs. Frank (Clara) Hiebsch, Dorchester; Mrs. H. J. (Elsie) Koppa, Flint, Mich.; and Mrs. E. J. (Isabel) Fuchsgruber, Dorchester; six grand children, and six great grand children.

His parents, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
