Harold Zander of Starbuck passed away Saturday, May 2 at the age of 67.

A memorial service will be held in late August at East Zion Lutheran Church, with his ashes interred at the Ellertson/Mortenson Cemetery. Harold was born July 25, 1941 and baptized September 21, 1941 in St. Paul. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, N. D. on May 25, 1958, and his sister Pauline was confirmed at the same time. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1959.

He joined the US Army shortly after graduation and did his basic training at Fort Ord, Calif. After being trained as a journalist, and radio and TV announcer at Fort Slocum, N. Y. he was assigned as a Finance Clerk stationed at Fort Sill, Okla.

Daughter Judi Maxine Zander was born in Jamestown, N. D. August 23, 1962. In May 1963, he moved his family to Las Vegas, Nev. where his twin sons Wade and Ward were born July 9, 1963.

Harold worked for: Anderson Dairy, wholesale dairy products delivery 1963-67; North Las Vegas Police Department as patrolman, traffic motorcycle officer, and detective 1967-74; Clark County District Attorney Sergeant Investigator 1974-75; and Albertson’s Regional Security Manager 1975-76.

After divorcing his first wife, he married Wendy Johnson Schaub, and in 1976 Wendy and he moved to Costa Mesa, Calif. Wendy retired in 1994 from the Irvine Water District as a General Accounting Supervisor, and Harold retired in 1998 from Lockheed Martin Corporation as a Security Manager to take the position of Sprint PCS Security Manager for Southern California and Nevada. He retired for good in January 2001 after a botched radical prostatectomy.

During his career he received Letters of Commendation from: FBI Special Agent in Charge, Los Angeles, Calif., 1992; FBI Director William Sessions, 1991; United States Marine Corps, Marine Air Group 50, EL Toro, CA, 1990; United States Defense Investigative Service, 1989; United States Defense Logistics Agency, 1989; Office of the Secretary of Defense, 1986; Chief of Police, Costa Mesa, Orange County, Calif., 1978 and Chief of Police, North Las Vegas, Clark County, Nev. 1969.

Harold is survived by his wife of 36 years, Wendy, his sons Wade (Vickie) of Michigan and Ward (Melinda) of California, his daughter Judi of Oregon, and step-daughter Linda of Nevada, sisters Kathy and Deborah, brother Kenneth, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Opal Lair Zander, brothers Raymond and Richard, and sister Pauline Davis.

Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
