Owen’s 75th Annual Junior Fair Commences (2023)

By L. B., reporter

Owen-Withee held the fair over a three-day weekend. The fair included a city-wide garage sale, S and J Enterprises Carnival, live music and more.

The fair took place July 21–23, and O-W citizens celebrated the 75th return of a longstanding tradition.

Exhibits were set up in the Old School Gym. There was a fruit dessert contest and a square-dancing lesson for the community. Several vendors and craftsmen came to sell their items.

“You have to have patience,” said Ann Nycz, a vendor helping her husband sell his woodwork.

Inside Owen’s Old School House, Joseph and Ann Nycz sold Joseph’s wooden crafts, like handcrafted wooden bowl. Joseph also makes a wide variety of items, from pepper grinders to clocks to pens. L.B./Clark County Press

“This is all handcrafted,” said Joseph Nycz. “I do wood turning with the lathe and glaze some, too. I make styluses, bowls, candlesticks, pens—lots of stuff.”

Joseph Nycz recently began making bracelet assists, tools that help people put on a bracelet. The Nyczes have been married for 64 years and Joseph has done woodcraft for 13 years.

Doug Hill made crochet items for his exhibit, including blankets, purses, scarves and seats. His projects take weeks to complete, and he has crocheted for over 10 years.

Ingrid Llané was selling pastries her husband baked. He made sweetbreads, hot tamales, eclairs and more. She has two kids and originates from Guatemala.

The Gerald Frese Memorial Horse Pull took place at 1 p.m. and included several horse teams and a large crowd gathered in memory of Gerald Frese, who loved and always participated in horse pulls. The horses pulled weights across a field in the medium weight and heavy weight categories.

The Kiddie Parade took place during the pull, with little kids on bikes with signs celebrating the 75th Annual Junior Fair and promoting local businesses.

Thorp – Bratcher Law Office Closes (2023)

Bratcher Law Office in Thorp Closes

Former Attorney, current Clark County Branch 2 judge, Will Bratcher is closing the Bratcher law Office in Thorp to meet legal criteria of being a judge. The office was remodeled a few years ago to include a ramp for accessibility, an awning, landscaping and some internal updates. It’s planned the building will go to a local couple who is excited about the options the property has. L.B./Clark County Press

By L .B., reporter

Bratcher Law Office of Thorp has officially closed as of Aug. 1. The owner, William Bratcher, was elected as Clark County Circuit 2 Judge April 4, investiture to take place July 31, and state law does not allow someone to be a lawyer and judge at the same time, so Bratcher’s office has been winding down in preparation for the new job.

“That process had several steps,” Bratcher said. “First, I had to stop taking new clients, second, I had to finish as many of my existing files as possible, and lastly, for those projects I’ve been unable to finish, I’ve had to refer to other attorneys to finish.”

The law office started in 2011 after taking over for Charles “Chuttie” Senn. The building will go to a local couple who are excited about the options the property brings.

Bratcher Law Office employees have transferred to the court that Bratcher will be working at and are adapting well to the new work.

“Unfortunately,” Bratcher said, “my leaving private practice will mean that Clark County has one less lawyer, and they’re already in short supply. I encourage any local students that are interested in the law to go to college and to law school, then come back to the area to practice. From land transactions to business formations, to family court, estate planning and beyond, there is more than enough work available in Clark County.

“I want my clients to know that if they ever need access to anything I may still have in their file, they can still email www.info@bratcherlawoffice.com  after Aug. 1, and I will do my best to get whatever I can to them.

“For my estate planning clients (wills, trusts, powers of attorney), please know that I did not keep any of your original documents, and it is not necessary to “register” your plan with another attorney.

When the time comes to either make changes or to use your documents, you and/or your loved ones can contact any other estate planning or probate attorney licensed in the state of Wisconsin to help with that.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve you.”

Youth group completes mission trip

July 8 through the 15, six youth and two adults from Calvary Lutheran Church in Neillsville participated in a mission trip to Mission, SD. The mission trip’s focus was on Home Repair for the Sicangu Lakota people living on the Rosebud Reservation.

Attendees included John Anderson, Sella Anderson, Addison Anderson Ruskin, Claiton Anderson Ruskin, Collin Knoff and Mark Jorgensen, supervised by Tonia Anderson Ruskin and Paul Knoff.

The theme of the week was “forged.” Daily, the group explored themes starting with hope, to suffering, leading to perseverance, building character and ending back with hope.

Assemblies, worship and youth group time was committed to exploring and sharing about these topics. The key message was that struggles make people more compassionate people with the strength to persevere. This experience reminded the youth group God is always with them and for them, as people are both forged by past experiences and by forging ahead in life.

The group rented a 15-passenger van with tools and supplies to paint homes, repair decks/railings/ramps and weatherize homes. Pastor Chad sent the group off in prayer.

In the group’s travels, they visited the Badlands National Park (hiked Notch Trail), attended the Fort Hayes Supper and Show and tubed down the Niobrara River (stopping at Smith Falls) on the group’s half-work day.

In total, 258 campers from 21 churches across nine states came together to form 43 work crews. Work crews consisted of workers from different churches. These crews worked at 27 sites for a total of 7,740 service hours.

All home repair sites were completed fully by the end of the day, July 14. Attendees grew both personally and spiritually, connected with others, developed leadership and team skills, and deepened their faith while helping others. Highlights of the trip included meeting Sicangu Lakota residents, learning about their culture and crafts and living in their community.

Michelle Tesmer reported the Clark County Humane Society (CCHS) received a “tremendous” amount of paper towels, with hundreds and hundreds of rolls delivered. “We couldn’t be more thankful for the donations, as our shelves were empty, and it’s a product that we use every day,” Tesmer said. “It never ceases to amaze me that when we ask for something that is much needed, our community steps up and fulfills our request immediately.” In addition to the paper towels, CCHS asked for plain canned pumpkin and regular yogurt for nursing mama Husky, Lalika, as well as milk replace in case the CCHS needed to supplement her puppies. “People came through for us again, and we are now able to help Laika settle her nursing belly with some good fiber and probiotics,” Tesmer said. Several people asked the CHS about its wish list, available at cchs-petshelter.org, so paper towels were sent in with other items on the list used daily. “We have an amazing group of supporters,” Tesmer said. They allow us to care for the animals here in the best possible way.” (below) Ginny and Judy are two such donators who were named on the CCHS’s Facebook page.
