Former Resident Dies At Stevens Point

Mrs. William J. Gavin, 78 years old, widow of a veteran Soo Line railroad conductor, died Monday morning at 5:40 o’clock at her home at Stevens Point. She had been in failing health for several years.

Mrs. Gavin, the former Jennie Marie Reton, was born on March 4, 1870, at Nelsonville. Shortly after her birth, the family located in Stevens Point.

Her marriage to Mr. Gavin took place on Jan. 25, 1891, at St. Stephen’s Catholic church. Mr. Gavin was a conductor for the Wisconsin Central railroad and later the Soo Line. At the time of his death in July, 1924, Mr. Gavin was the oldest conductor, in point of service, on the road.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Gavin lived in Stevens Point for a number of years and then resided at Abbotsford, Minneapolis and Mellen for short periods, before returning to Stevens Point 25 years ago.

Surviving are four children, Mrs. O. G. Koch, Madison; William R. Gavin, St. Paul; Mrs. M. G. Fisher, and Mrs. E. E. Hegg, Wheaton, Ill.; 10 grand children and five great grand children. A daughter, Ethel, died in 1921.

Mrs. Gavin was a member of St. Stephen’s church and the auxiliary to the Order of Railway Conductors.
