Johnson, Gertrude Isabelle (3 June 1921 - 30 May 2009)

Gertrude Johnson 87, of Neillsville, died Saturday, May 30, 2009, in her residence at the Neillsville Retirement community.

Gertrude Isabelle Murphy was born June 3, 1921, at her grandparents’ home in Greenwood, the daughter of Frank Walter and Lucille Agnes (Macknick) Murphy. She attended Mound School in Christie and graduated from Neillsville High School. She worked at Roddis in Marshfield before marrying. She was united in marriage to Nels Arnold Johnson Feb. 28, 1945, in Stanley. They farmed most of their lives and raised their six children on Suckow Road in Christie.

She is survived by her children, LeRoy (Barbara) Johnson of Granton, Gary (Becky) Johnson of Dubois, WY, Diane (Jerry) Steltenpohl of Marquette, MI, Charles (Judy) Johnson of Greenwood, Marcia (Rick) Ziegler of Neillsville and Kathy (Dale) Reiter of Waverly, IA; 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Fran Ormond of Christie and Marjorie (Jim) Kurasz of Dubois, WY; sisters-in-law, Rosie Murphy of Greenwood and Jeanette Murphy of Black River Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, in 1991; brothers, Arthur, Harold and Bernard Murphy; and two grandsons.

Funeral services for Gertrude will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Globe. Pastor John Warmuth will officiate. Music will be provided by Karen Hoppa, organist. Interment will be in the Marie Louise Chapel Cemetery in Christie. Visitation was from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Gesche Funeral Home and will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Casketbearers are grandsons Andrew, Peter, Steven, Kenny, Mathew, Jay and Ben Johnson and Kyle and Paul Miller. Honorary Casketbearers are grandsons Greg and Jason Steltenpohl.
