Metcalf, Dale R. (26 Jan. 1927 - 9 June 2009)

Dale R. Metcalf

Dale R. Metcalf, 82, Plymouth, formerly of Random Lake, died Tuesday morning, June 9, 2009, at the Sheboygan Senior Community from complications of diabetes.

He was born on Jan. 26, 1927 in Greenwood (Clark County), a son of the late James and Clara (Vollrath) Metcalf. He graduated form Greenwood High School. Dale then served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps during World War II from 1945-1948. He attended UW-River Falls, and graduated with a teaching degree in agriculture and science. Mr. Metcalf taught at Auburndale High School, Princeton High School and for 30 years at Random Lake High School, retiring in 1987. In 1956 he married Dolores Tunison.

Random Lake's FFA Chapter was organized by instructor Bill Scadden during the 1956-57 year. When Mr. Metcalf arrived in the fall of 1957 he began 30 years as the FFA advisor. For many years the Future Farmers chapter raised money by selling concessions at Ram football and basketball games.

Mr. Metcalf was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sherman Center. He was a member of Hamm-Miller American Legion Post 145 in Random Lake and had served as a village trustee in Random Lake.

Mr. Metcalf will be remembered as a man who had a strong sense of duty and had a clever sense of humor. He gave willingly to his students, family and friends--and while in Plymouth enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the Plymouth Senior Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Terri Metcalf (husband Larry Valtinson) and Linda (Howard) Theis, both of New Brighton, Minn; four grandsons; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He also was preceded in death by one son.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Sherman Center.  The Rev Gregory Laska, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Sunday from noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Mr.  Metcalf's name for the American Diabetes Association. The Wittkopp-Schneider Funeral Home in Plymouth is assisting the family.
