Bertelsen, Maryan L. (2 July 1916 - 1 March 2009)

Maryan L. (Bakken) Bertelsen, formerly of Black River Falls and Neillsville, passed away March 1, 2009, at United Hospital in St. Paul, MN.

Maryan was born July 2, 1916, to Arne and Florence (Schultz) Bakken in Black River Falls.  Her early years were spent in Neillsville, where her parents operated a restaurant and she developed her love of cooking.  When she was 14, the family moved back to Black River Falls.  She graduated from Black River Falls High School in 1935.  As an adult, she worked for Jackson County from 1939 to 1959.  In 1953, she was a Pillsbury baking contest winner.

She married Loren "Bert" Bertelsen in 1956.  They moved to Madison in 1959 with their three children (Alan, Patricia and Robert).

Maryan worked for the Selective Service from 1960 - 1961, the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections from 1961 to 1967 and the University of Wisconsin Department of Behavioral Disabilities from 1967 to 1978.  At the University of Wisconsin, she was a friend and confidant of many graduate students, who often brought her mementos from around the world.  She retired in 1978 to pursue her interests in family, travel and cooking.

Maryan loved reading and fine clothes.

In 1979 Bert and Maryan moved to a house in Sauk City, where they resided until 2002. Her son, Robert of Menomonie, died in a tragic car accident in 2001.  In 2002 they moved to Baldwin to be closer to family and friends.

Maryan is survived by her husband of 52 years, Loren; her son, Alan (Carmen) Bertelsen of Red Wing, MN; her daughter, Patricia Bertelsen and Patricia’s husband, Peter Nash, of Washington, D. C.; her daughter-in-law, Kathy Kuhn Bertelsen of Menomonie; and her sister, Dorothy (Dick) Crecelius of Hopkinsville, KY.  In addition, Maryan is survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Services were held Friday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond.  Burial will be held Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Black River Falls.

Memorials are appreciated as the family has designated specific memorials.
