Romens, Joan Lucy (22 December 1933 - 6 August 2009)

Joan L. Romens, 75, of Neillsville went to the Lord Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, surrounded by her family.

Joan Lucy Romens was born Dec. 22, 1933, in East Troy, the daughter of the later Margaret Josephine (Chart) and Frank Henry Friemoth.  She had 15 siblings. She married Floyd Bernard Romens, Feb. 25, 1954.  They have six children.

Joan graduated from UW-Whitewater, after which she taught grade school until becoming a full-time homemaker. She still held various part-time jobs, and when her children had grown and left home, she continued caring and nurturing by becoming a nursing home assistant. When she could no longer perform those duties, she took on a labor of love as a caretaker for individual shut-ins around Neillsville.  Joan lived much of her adult life in and around Madison, retiring to Neillsville in 1994.  She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd of Neillsville; two sons, Jeffery (Joyce) Romens and their children, Carrie and Alissa Romens, of Hayward and Gregory (Suzi) Romens and their children, Tyler and Andrew Romens, of Colorado Springs, CO; four daughters, Linda (Marc Steinberg) Romens of Taos, NM, Kathryn (Don) Hawkins of St. Augustine, FL, Janet (Mike) Roessler and their children, Nicole, Stephanie and Kyle Roessler, of Cross Plains and Margaret (James Horton) Romens of Columbus.

She is further survived by three sisters, Margaret Deneen, Phyllis (Bob) Welch and mary Ellen (Michael) Vilona; seven brothers, Jim (Jean) Friemoth, Leo Friemoth, Vincent (Joyce) Friemoth, Milton (Yvonne) Friemoth, Larry (Sharon) Friemoth, Alan (Barbara) Friemoth and Richard (Donna) Friemoth.

Joan was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty (Ed) Baker, Rose Marie (Don) Nelson and Bonnie (Jack) Mahoney, and two brothers, Robert Friemoth and Francis Friemoth.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville with Father Woodrow Pace as the celebrant.  Providing music was Ronald Resong, organist, and Rita Kuchenbecker, vocalist.  Visitation was held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday prior to the service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.

Serving as Casketbearers were Don Hawkins, Jim Horton, Mike Roessler, Greg Romens, Jeff Romens and Kyle Roessler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 611 W. Doege St. Marshfield, WI 54449.
