Cendt, Malcolm (4 Nov. 1930 - 5 May 1956)

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church for Malcolm Cendt, 25, one of two victims killed early Saturday morning in a head-on collision at the south limits of Edgar. The body lay in state at the church from 11:30 until 2:00 o’clock, when final rites were held.

The Rev. Richard Harrison conducted the services during which a trio, composed of the Misses Selma and Joan Fristad and Lois Ehrenreich, sang "Be Still My Soul," and "God Will Take Care of You." Mrs. J. F. Samson was accompanist. Military rites were under the auspices of the National Guard, of which the deceased was an active member. The Guards provided an honor guard at the church while the body lay in state and served as a firing squad. The American Legion supplied the color guard and David Michlig was bugler. Lt. Robert Frautschy presented the flag to the family at the internment made in the Colby cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles Loucks, Abbotsford; George Schmidt and Milton Lenz, Colby; Wallace Hinz, Madison; Ronald Reiche, Edgar; and Dan Markstrum, Wausau.

The flowers were carried by Mrs. Alois Barbain, Wausau; Mmes. Milton Lenz, George Schmidt and Alphonse Schraufnagel; and the Mmes. Susan Mantor and Donna Anderson.

Attending the rites were many relatives and friends and the National Guard in a body. Out of town relatives and friends came from Bayfield, Wausau, Edgar, La Crosse, Winona, Blair, Marshfield, Madison, Hixton and Greenwood.

Malcolm Cendt was born in the town of Hull, Nov. 4, 1930, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cendt. He was educated in the Rusk and Riverview schools and was graduated from the Colby high school; served in the United States army having been in Korea a year. After separation from the services Apr. 26, 1955, he rejoined the National Guards and was a member of Service Battery, 173rd F.A. Bn. at Abbotsford. He was employed by Johnson Block and Silo Company, at Colby.

Besides his parents, with whom he made his home, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Roger (Beverly) Eckes, Wausau; and his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Cendt, Wausau; and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lowe, Abbotsford.

The accident which took the life of Mr. Cendt occurred at 4:45 a.m. Saturday. The other victim was Edward Myszka, 25, Route 5, Edgar. Police said both victims were alone in their vehicles and were apparently homeward bound. Both had attended the Edgar prom Friday night and had breakfasted together with their prom dates in an Edgar restaurant about an hour before the accident. They took their respective companions home and apparently were heading for their homes themselves when the accident occurred.

Mr. Myszka was driving north on County Highway H and Mr. Cendt was driving south on the same road when the crash occurred. Both were taken to St. Mary’s hospital, Wausau, in a police ambulance and were pronounced dead upon entry.
