Zschernitz, Edmund (30 March 1889 –? 1956) 
 

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning from St. Mary’s Catholic Church for Mr. Zschernitz.  The Rev. Fr. Peter Leketas officiated.  Burial was made in the parish cemetery.  A general rosary was said Monday evening at the Bergemann Funeral Home, where the body reposed since Sunday. 
 

Mr. Zschernitz was born March 30, 1889, in Hamburg, Germany.  When he was six his family came to the United States and settled in Chicago.  They later moved onto a farm south of Neillsville.  Upon completion of his schooling he worked in logging camps and on farms. 
 

He entered military service June 6, 1917, at Neillsville and served on the Mexican border.  He was then sent o France, where he was supply sergeant in Co. ‘A’, Third Wisconsin Infantry.  He received his discharge on November 4, 1919, at Camp Merritt, N. J.  Following his discharge he went to work for the Clark County Highway department, a position he held for 33 years.  He retired April 1, 1954.   
 

Mr. Zschernitz was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion, Haugen-Richmond Post No. 73.  He was active in Legion work and served as Color bearer for many years.  
 

His marriage to Elizabeth Sonnentag took place January 15, 1933. 
 

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. William (Patricia) Seif; and one son, Edmund, Jr., with the armed forces in Japan; and three grandchildren.  Also surviving are a brother, Carl Zschernitz of Neillsville, and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Wildish of Merrillan.   
 

Employees of the County Highway Department attended the rites in a body.  
 

Pallbearers were: Henry Helman, Walter Kren, Maurice Meredith, John M. Peterson, Harold Prock and Fred Wall.
