Huinker, Edna Catherine (14 June 1918 - 27 December 2009)

Edna Catherine Grap Huinker, 91, of Dubuque, IA, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 27, 2009, at Stonehill Care Center, surrounded by her loving family, following a very brief illness.

She was born Flag Day, June 14, 1918, in Greenwood, daughter of Edward and Frances (Einck) Hinker.  She went to St. mary’s Catholic School until the end of her eighth grade year.

She married Franklin "Kaiser" Grap in 1945; he preceded her in death Nov. 23, 1957.  She later married Gregory Huinker in 1960; he preceded her in death in 1985.

As a widow, Edna worked at Schroeder Funeral Home, Marling Lumber Company and a doctor’s office to support her two young children.  She eventually left Madison, WI, and moved to Ossian, MA, in 1960.  She and Greg farmed until 1972, when they moved to town.  Edna then worked at St. Francis De Sales school cafeteria for seven years.  She retired when she turned 62 and later moved to Dubuque to be near her two children and their families.

She was a faithful member of St. Raphael’s Cathedral, Madison, St. Francis De Sales, Ossian, IA, and The Church of the Nativity, Dubuque.  She also attended Mass often at St. Columbkille’s after moving to her Bryant Street apartment.

Edna will most be remembered for her strong faith in God, her deep love for her family and her enjoyment in watching the Cubs and packers. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and a great cook.

Surviving are her son, Gary Grap, and her daughter, Cheryl (Bob) Werner, both of Dubuque; her daughter in law, Vickie Grap of Neillsville; 16 grandchildren: Conan, Mya, Martia, Kaiser, Garrett, Magdalena, Lola, Isaac, Jasmine, Michael, Kevin, Tammie, Kaila, Mark, Justin and Kirstin; 12 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; her goddaughter, JoAnn Kaiser; a sister-in-law, Viola Tessmer; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; a daughter, Patty Ann; a stepson, Wayne; and many treasured family members and friends.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at the Church of the Nativity, Dubuque, IA.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Greenwood, at a later date.

The Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2592 Rockdale Road, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to The Cancer Society, Dubuque County Right to Life and Nativity Parish in Edna’s name.
