George Gorbet, 81, of Neillsville died
Monday, March 8, 2010, at his home.
George LaVern Gorbet was born May 28,
1928, in Warrens, the son of Ray and Clara (North) Gorbet. George
married Mary E. Capaul at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tomah
July 6, 1949. They bought a house in Sturtevant. George
was a welder at Massey Harris Company in Racine. He was
drafted into the United States Army in 1952 and receive basic
training at Fort Chaffee, AR. He attended wheeled-vehicle
mechanics schools at Fort Chaffee, AR, and at Fort Sill, OK.
Then he was sent to Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany, and was assigned
to the 3rd Battalion of the 6th Armored
Calvary as tank recovery mechanic and welder. In 1954, he was
discharged and returned to Sturtevant and back to Massey Harris and
then to Hough Company in Libertyville, IL.
IN 1960, they moved to a farm south of
Neillsville, and lived there for 25 years, then moved to their
present home on Oak Street. George owned Agri-Supply and
Distributing for several years and also worked as an insurance
salesperson. George was also a member of the Neillsville
American Legion Post 73. In his spare time George loved
woodworking, gardening and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two
sons, George R. Gorbet of West Allis and Gerald (Sally) Gorbet of
Neillsville; two grandchildren, Shawna Anderson and Greggory R.
Gorbet; and a sister, Lois (Kenneth) Conradson of
He was preceded in death by a sister,
Doris Conant; a brother, Leonard; and his parents.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for
George will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville. The Celebrant
will be Fr. Woodrow H. Pace. Military honors will be accorded
by the Neillsville Veteran’s Council. Visitation will
be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m.
at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Visitation will be
held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Neillsville.
