Michael, John (2 January 1869 - 7 September 1958)

Double funeral services were conducted last Thursday afternoon for the late Mr. and Mrs. John Michael of Humbird, who died as the result of a fire in their home September 7.  The Rev. Carl Serr officiated, and burial was made in the Town of Mentor Cemetery.

Mr. Michael, 89, was born January 2, 1869, in Nauvoo, Ill., son of the late John and Anna Michael.  On February 12, 1895, he was married there to Bertha Repplinger.  Three years later they moved near Humbird, where they operated a farm.  Mrs. Michael died in 1918, and on February 18, 1919, he married Lena Messerli Urfer.  During the 1920’s they moved into Humbird, where they resided at the time of their deaths.

Mr. Michael was the last charter member of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Humbird.   Which was organized in 1900.  Besides farming he served the Town of Mentor as supervisor, chairman, assessor and treasurer, and was a member of the school board for 25 years.  He also managed the potato, grain and feed elevator in Humbird for eight years and served as Humbird postmaster for 16 years.  He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Masonic lodges.

Five children survive: Oswald of Humbird; George of Denver, Colo.; John of Bremen, Ind.; Mrs. Gladys Anderson of Eau Claire and Mrs. Alice Ernston, Minneapolis. A sister, Mrs. Repplinger, Moose Lake, Minn.; and two brothers, Herman of Nauvoo, Ill. and Louis Michael of Kansas City, Mo., also survive, as do five grandchildren.
