La Fond, Betty Jean (Kelsey) (February 18, 1922 - June 30,
Betty Jean (Kelsey) La Fond, 88, passed away at a rehabilitation
facility in Mt. Dora, Fla., on June 30, 2010.
Betty was born in Abbotsford, WI, Feb. 18, 1922. She attended
school in Abbotsford, competing in music and forensics. Following
high school, she enrolled in the University of WI in Madison,
graduating with a BA in 1944, intending to go to library school.
But, because of the teacher shortage brought about by WWII, she
took education credits at Stevens Point and taught school in
Dorchester, before marrying Harlo "Skeets" La Fond in August, 1945.
She also taught in Hollandale and Tomah.
Betty and Harlo moved to Tomah in 1963, remaining there till 1976
when they relocated to Chetek. Harlo retired from Northwest
Telephone Co. in 1983 at which time they moved from Chetek to
Eustis, Fla., where they were very active in Country Club Manor,
their home association. Following the death of Harlo in 2006, Betty
moved into an assisted living facility in Tavares, Fla.
Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Doris and brother, Jack.
She is survived by sons, James (Marilyn), Greg (Sherrie), John
(Karen); daughters, Jeanne and Sally; grandchildren, Amy, Chris,
Brian, Kyle, Ryan, and Danielle; and one great granddaughter,
