Gross, Fred (15 JUN 1873 - 15 APR 1951)


Fred Gross passed away at the home of his son Russell Gross of Richfield, Calif., at 11:05 a.m., Sunday, April 15th, 1951, at the age of 78 years and 3 months.


He was born in Jefferson, Wis., on June 15, 1873, and came to Loyal about 1898.  On May 13, 1900, he married Sophie Dutcher of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.).  They lived many years on their farm home near Spokeville (Clark Co.)


He attended the Moody Bible School and was a devout Christian worker.  His many deeds of kindness will long be remembered by his many friends and neighbors.


He is survived by three sons and one daughter, Pliny of Colton, Calif.; Russell of Richfield, Calif.; Melvin of Milwaukee, and (Eva) Mrs. Ben Johnson of Soldiers Grove.  Also a brother, John Gross of Fort Atkinson; two sisters, Hattie Hooker, Watertown, and Mrs. Mary Swartz, Janesville, fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in Yost Chapel in Corning.  Rev. N.J. Arechuk, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, officiated.


"I Won’t Have to Cross Jordan Alone" and "Nearer My God to Thee," were sung by J. Lloyd Moore, accompanied by Mrs. Moore.


Pallbearers were Bruce H. Erwin, Theron B. Looker, James P. Gilbert, Julius Gilbert, Layton Greeno and R.D. Clary.


His son, Pliny, accompanied the body to Soldiers Grove, Wis., where a second funeral was held later in the week.


Interment was made in Soldiers Grove Cemetery beside his wife, who preceded him in death Jan. 5, 1948.
