Arends, John (30 SEP 1874  - 9 SEP 1960)

Military funeral services were held Monday for John Arends, 85, from Grace Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gene Carlson officiating. The funeral was conducted by the Wallis-Hinker Legion Post.  Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Donald Ellingson of Marshfield was the soloist.  She sang "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset" accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Don Warner.

 

Pallbearers, all Legion members, were: LeRoy Fravert, John Suda, William Bayuk, John F. Trunkel, Earl Gordee and Kenneth Hium.  Honorary pallbearers, all veterans of World War I, were: Carl Stabnow, John Meng, Fred Behrens, Alfred Schwarze, John Mortel, Calvin Franz, Harry Gordee and David Thwing.

 

Kenneth Speich commanded the Legion firing squad, composed of Cletus Susa, George Plautz, John D. Speich, Valentine Yurkovich, Donald Lindner, Frank Petkovsek, Cecil Lombard, George Grabara, Jr., and Mike Podobnik.  The color guard was composed of Edward Bogdonovich and Lavern Brown; color bearers were Al Hemmersbach and Robert Carl.  Kenneth Rodgers and Richard Thompson folded the flag, which was presented to Mr. Arends’ daughter, Mrs. Harold Blaasch, by Mr. Speich. Dennis Neuenfeldt played taps.

 

Those from out of town attending were: Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Arends and daughter, Leona, and son, Andrew, of Colby; Joseph Arends of Campbellsport; Mrs. Katherine Klas of Port Washington; Miss Rue Cummings and Louise Perry of Sparta, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Arends of Marshfield; Mr. and Mrs. Norman Heeg of Hewitt; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Blaasch and Mrs. Melville Rief of Medford; Mr. and Mrs. Morris Anderson of Stevens Point; Dr. and Mrs. Hale Hunt of La Crosse; Mr. and Mrs. John Jalling and Mrs. Bert Miller of Withee; Mrs. Jerome Bertz, Mrs. Otto Rossow and Mrs. Claude Catlin of Loyal.
