Kenneth G. Mellenthin, 81, formerly of Spencer, died on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. A memorial service was held 11 a.m., on Thursday, Dec. 2, at St. John’s Lutheran Church ELCA, Spencer. Rev. Rebekah Tarras officiated.


Kenneth Glenn Mellenthin was born on Dec. 7, 1928, in the town of Unity, the son of Arthur and Edna (nee Miller) Mellenthin. He attended Willow Brook School and graduated from Spencer High School in 1947. On Feb. 25, 1948, he married Lois Freeman at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Spencer. The couple owned and operated a local farm and he also worked as a carpenter. He was a long-time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, time at the cabin and rides on his pontoon boat. He always cherished time spent fishing with his grandchildren.


He is lovingly survived by his wife, Lois; six children, Dianna (Frank) Jacobitz, Dennis (Karen) Mellenthin, Becky (James) Murphy, Ronald (Rebecca) Mellenthin, Julie (Bill) Ausbourne, and Debra (Neil) Wakershauser; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Phyllis Simpson, Marilyn Hotsenpillar, and Theone (Jack) Lundquest; as well as many other family and friends. He will truly be missed.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Edna; a son-in-law, Steve Meidl; and a sister, Janice Porter.
