Kalsow, Donald  (14 MARCH 1920-26 DEC 2010)

 

Donald G. "Kelly" Kalsow, 90, Neillsville, died on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neillsville. Rev. Timothy Biebert officiated. Sharon Nemitz, organist and Bunny Dux, soloist, provided music. Interment was in the Neillsville City Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Neillsville Veterans Council.

 

Donald Gustave Kalsow was born on March 14, 1920, in the township of Weston, to Gustav and Minnie (nee Wegner) Kalsow. He received his education at Christie and St. John’s Lutheran School and Neillsville High school. He left for the Army in 1942. He received a medical discharge. He worked at a variety of jobs as a young man upon returning from the service. He worked four years at the Sherriff’s Department and spent 32 years at the post office as a rural carrier, retiring in 1982. He married Lucille Wilding in 1950. They enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling and traveling. He enjoyed fishing as a young man. His wife passed in 1987. After retiring, he spent time traveling in his RV. He also worked as a part-time employee for Gross Motors, Neillsville. In 1990, he married Bernice (Boon) Zickert. They enjoyed camping and traveling. They spent the winters in Arizona and have many friends there. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, a member of the American Legion for 66 years, and served on the building committee for the new American Legion Hall. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Good Sam Camping Club and the Marshlanders camping group.

 

Survivors include his wife Bernice; seven children and step-children, Beverly (Dale) Reinart, Neillsville, Barbara Johnson, Augusta, Wayne (Ethel) Kalsow, Neillsville, Frank (Cindy) Zickert, Arpin, Dennis Zichert, Lyndon, Ill., Linda (Steve) Scharenbrock, Willard, and Cindy Zickert, Bonduel; 28 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Ruby Allen, Cedar Park, Texas, Gladys (Calvin) Gerhardt, Neillsville, Dorothy Buettner, Salem, and Rachel Ristow, Wisconsin Rapids.

 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille; his parents; two step-sons, Rick Zickert and Terry Zickert; and a granddaughter, Olivia Jane Kalsow.
