Etta, Elmer (23 APR 1888-05 JAN 1956)

 

Elmer James Etta, son of the late J. Henry and Anna Stange Etta was born in Loyal on April 23, 1888. He received his elementary education here graduating from the Loyal High School in 1907. He also attended Wausau College.

 

In 1917 he was elected village treasurer at Loyal. He also held the position of village clerk.

 

With his father and his brother Oscar, he operated a flour and feed store here. For several years he worked for the O & N Lumber Co. Later he went to Washburn where he operated a business of his own, retiring in 1949 because of ill health.

 

Mr. Etta was united in marriage with Esther M. LeGault in St. Paul on August 27, 1920.

 

He was over seas with the armed forces in World War l and was active in band work, serving as a musician with the 77th Field Artillery, 4th Division.

 

He was a charter was a charter member of the American Legion Post of Loyal and served as its Post Commander.

 

Mr. Etta  who had been ill since 1949, had been a patient at the Grand Army Home at King for the past seven months. His wife resided there and helped care for him. He died at King Hospital at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 5.

 

Services were held at 8 a/m/ Monday, January 9, at the Stabnow Funeral Home in Greenwood and at 9 a.m. funeral services were held in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwood, with Rev. Father Augustine Svete, O.F.M. of Willard officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery. A rosary was conducted in the evening by the Rev. Father Beno.

 

Military services were conducted by the Greenwood American Legion Post. Pallbearers were from the Loyal Post. They were Henry Boe, Eugene Colby, Edward Dobbe, Vernard Kauffman, Jesse Raab, and Kenneth Weyhmiller.

 

Mr. Etta is survived by his wife; two children Mrs. George (Valrie) Humke and Robert Etta, both of Sterling, Illinois; one brother, Oscar of Eau Claire, and four sisters, Mrs. Harold (Esther) Stabbnow, Greenwood, Mrs. Fred (Mabel) Tolleth, Wisconsin Dells, Mrs. Perry (Maude) Volk, Loyal and Mrs. Carl (Florence) Keiner, Eau Claire.

 

Relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. Elmer Etta, King; Mr. & Mrs. George Humke, Sterling, Illinois; Mr. & Mrs. Harold Stabbnow, Greenwood; Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Etta, Eau Claire; Mr. & Mrs. Fred Tolleth, Wisconsin Dells; Mr. & Mrs. Perry Volk, Loyal; Mr. & Mrs. Carl Keiner, Misses Mary and Marl Keiner, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Black, Eau Claire.

 

Mr. & Mrs. Dale Stabbnow, Baraboo; Clarence Etta and Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Anderson; Minneapolis; Mrs. Celia Woodkey, Colby; Mr. & Mrs. Frank Stange, Loyal; Mr. & Mrs. Ed Regan, Chicago; Mr. & Mrs. Harry Palms, Sterling, Illinois; Gordon LeGault, and Mr. & Mrs. L.
