Wilbur School (Reunion - 27 May 1962)

Old Schoolhouse lives again for 50-year reunion Sunday

A gathering was held Sunday in the old Wilbur schoolhouse, now owned by Miss Daisy Stevens and located a short way from her home.  The building has been used for storage for some time, but willing hands of neighbors and friends scrubbed floors, walls, windows and blackboard until it was shining with cleanliness.

This old schoolhouse must have been built somewhere in the 1870’s or perhaps 1880’s, and if schoolhouses could talk many tales could be told of the Teachers and pupils.

For many years, most of our girls on finishing Humbird High taught their first year here.  One of these teachers was Miss Bernice Cole, now Mrs. Chet Baily, who taught there in 1912, just 50 years ago.

Sunday, in her honor, a dinner was held in the old Schoolhouse, with 18 or more of her former pupils present.  Some came from Milwaukee, Mosinee and Neillsville, and those not present sent cards and gifts.  Old neighbors and friends were present to make the day planned by Miss Daisy Stevens, Mrs. Fred Barr and Mrs. Fred Rupnow a complete success.

Mrs. Ernest Stevens, Mrs. Emma Mitchel and Mrs. Edwin Koboski were among those who served the dinner.  Mrs. Baily was presented with a corsage and a purse of money.
