Metcalf, Mary I. (28 APR 1867 - 6 JAN 1944)

Mrs. Mary I. Metcalf, a resident of this vicinity (Humbird, Clark Co., Wis.) previous to 1891, died at her home in Puyallup, Wash., on Jan. 6, 1944, at the age of 77 years and was buried in a cemetery in that city on the following Saturday.  Survivors are her husband, one son and one daughter, also a granddaughter.

Mary Irene, only daughter of the late Edgar and Elizabeth (Nettleton) Houghton, was born on her grandfather, the David Houghton farm, later the Bleiler place, on April 28, 1867.  When a small child her parents moved to the farm a mile south of Humbird.  She attended Humbird School when it had only a one room school, and, grown to young womanhood and taught in the school, and also in several rural schools.  She was married Feb. 11, 1891, to Franz D. Metcalf of Marengo, Ill., where they lived until seventeen years later when they moved to Puyallup, Wash.  Mrs. Metcalf was the last survivor of the Edgar Houghton family, prominent in these parts for many years.  Her father died in 1925.  She was a cousin of Mrs. F. G. Shatswell, who passed away at Kalama, Wash., last month.
