Thompson, Burnell Victor (5 October 1922 - 25 June 2011) With Flag

 

Burnell Victor Thompson, 88, of rural Gilman, died Saturday, June 25th at home with his family by his side under the care of Hope Hospice.  He was born on October 5, 1922, in Greenwood, the son of Henry and Hazel (Boe) Thompson, being the second of seven children.  Burnell’s family moved to the Town of Taft north of Thorp in 1941.

 

He entered the Army serving in the 467th AAA Artillery AW Battalion from January of 1943 until January of 1946.  Burnell’s involvement included the 1st day on Omaha Beach on D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, earning five battle stars and the bronze star for performances of duty in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central European Campaigns.

 

After returning from the war, he worked for several years on the Davis Cattle Ranch in Wyoming, logging and working the green fields of the west.

 

On Jan. 19, 1952, he married Delores Barnett in Cornell and the couple has resided in the Town of Taft, farming, until his recent retirement. Burnell thoroughly enjoyed farming, the local wildlife, hunting deer and turkeys, and fishing.  He was a great storyteller and will be dearly missed by family and friends.

 

Burnell is survived by his wife of 59 years, Delores, of Thorp; his four children: Trudy (John) Chaplinski, Lee Thompson and Darrell Thompson, all of Thorp, and Wayne Thompson of West Jordan, Utah; nine grandsons: David (Lisa) Chaplinski of Stevens Point, Daniel (Debra) Chaplinski of Guam, Louis B. (Dawn) Chaplinski of Gilman, Richard Chaplinski of Stanley, Chancey, Jess, Joseph, Peter and Quinton Thompson, all of West Jordan, Utah; four great-grandchildren, who he enjoyed greatly: Lexi, Abby and Shaelan of Gilman and Nathan of West Jordan, Utah; three sisters: Viola Boardman of Washington, Dorothy Rosemeyer of Stanley, and Maureen Shufelt of Chippewa Falls; one brother, Gerald Thompson of Thorp; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Maynard and Richard.

 

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 30th, 2011, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Gilman . Rev. Howard Weber will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Meadowbrook Cemetery in Gilman with grandsons as pallbearers and Military Honors by the Gilman American Legion Post 359.  Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29th at the Gilman Funeral home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the Church.
