Chandler, William J. (29 Oct 1845 - 21 May 1914)

Wm. J. Chandler died last Thursday morning at his home on the north side.  He was born at Ottawa, Wis., Oct. 29, 1845, and received a common school education in Waukesha County.  At the age of 16 years he enlisted in the army, enlisting at Ripon in 1861 in Co. F First Wisconsin Cavalry, under Col. Daniels.  Col. Daniels was at the head of a small command, but he was a daring leader and under him Mr. Chandler developed into a scout of considerable prominence.  He was captured twice, but escaped both times in thrilling manners, and the various experiences he went through during his scouting duty were at all times exciting and interesting.  He was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tenn., in 1864 and returned to Ottawa where he spent a year and then went to Dodge County where he worked five years.  He then removed to Jackson County where he lived for thirty years on a farm in town of Albion.  He then removed to Neillsville, engaging in the fruit tree business, which occupied his attention until his death.

Mr. Chandler united in marriage in Tennessee to Emeline Humphreys on June 27, 1864, and to this union the following children were born: Thomas A., Wm. G., John H., Mary K., George, Emeline, Sarah and James R.  Mr. Chandler was united in marriage to Elizabeth Yorkston on July 19, 1906, and she survives him.  The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, Rev. Risser officiating.
