Miller, Herman J. (12 JAN 1868 - 20 APR 1948)

 

Funeral services for Herman J. Miller were held in the Methodist Church in this village, last Thursday afternoon, Rev. Wm. H. Summers of Merrillan officiating.  Many old neighbors and friends attended.  Mrs. Walter Smith and Mrs. Will Dignin, accompanied by Mrs. Will Theiler, sang "Near the Cross," "Rock of Ages," and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul."  Pallbearers were A.L. Sparkes, John Cole, Ed Shramek, Ervin Kelsh, M.B. Baumgartner, and A.W. Short.  Burial was in Mentor Cemetery.

 

Herman J. Miller, son of John F. and Wilhelmina Miller, was born in Germany on Jan. 12, 1868, and passed away in the hospital in Black River Falls early Tuesday morning, April 20, 1948, after a short illness.  He had reached the age of 80 years, 8 months and 8 days.

 

He came to this country as an infant with his parents, and his early life was spent in Green Co., Wisconsin.  On Oct. 26, 1893, he was united in marriage with Charlotte Parmer of Browntown, Wis., and to this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters.  Their early married life was spent in southern Wisconsin, four years on a farm near Argyle, one year in Green, near South Wayne.  In March 1915 they moved with their family to a farm east of Humbird (Clark Co., Wis.), where he lived the remainder of his life.

 

He leaves to mourn, five children: Clarence of South Wayne; Grace, Mrs. Eli Metcalf of Menomonie; Hattie, Mrs. J. J. Baumgartner of Milwaukee; Fayme, Mrs. C.C. Welty of Detroit; and Roy of Humbird; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Moore of Chicago; besides other relatives and many friends.

 

Preceding him in death were his wife, who passed away in September 1935, a sister, three brothers, and one granddaughter.

 

Those from out of town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Miller and son Harold, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller, and Miss hazel Simonson, all of South Wayne; Mr. and Mrs. Masie Ross of Darlington; Mr. and Mrs. Eli Metcalfe and daughter Marion, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Jackson of Menomonie; Mr. and Mrs. Elon Metcalfe, Downsville; Mr. and Mrs. Efford Michaletz and family, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. John J. Baumgarnter and sons, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Clay C. Welty, Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Scholze, Melrose; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kurasz and Mrs. Bertha Fenske of Neillsville.
