Welzien, Alan Russell (19 March 1923 - 5 July 2011)

 

Alan R. Welzien, age 88, of Loyal, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, on Tuesday, July 5, 2011.  Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday July 8, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Loyal. Rev. Daniel Zimmerman officiated and burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Withee.

 

Pallbearers were: Terry Biddle, David Welzien, Jeff Meeker, Arnie Becker, Orville Schwartz, and Dick Rhode.  Visitation was held at the church, on Friday, from 12:30 p.m. until time of service.

 

Alan Russell Welzien was born on March 19, 1923, in the Town of Reseburg, rural Thorp, the son of Emil and Grace (Mock) Welzien. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at Reseburg Grade School and graduated from Thorp High School in 1941.  After completing his education, Alan went to Grand Rapids, MI, where he was a sheet metal worker.  He was united in marriage to Grace Biddle on December 5, 1945, in Kent, WA.  Alan was a foreman at Libby Foods in Kent, WA, before returning to Thorp in 1948.  They moved to Loyal in 1949, and in 1950, Alan began working as an artificial inseminator for Tri-State Breeders.  He retired in 1985 after 35 years with the company.  He was a resident of the Clark County Health Care Center, in Owen, for the past 20 months.

 

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its Dart ball team.  Alan had many interests, but especially enjoyed bowling, the Packers, sports and politics.

 

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Grace, of Loyal; one daughter: Peggy (Alan) Rohde of Waukesha; two grandchildren; Dana (Chris) Mayne and Jay Rohde; two great-grandchildren: Brooks Mayne and Blake Mayne; one niece and three nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Clarence Welzien, and one sister, Leora Welzien at birth.
