Alan R. Welzien, 88, Loyal, died on Tuesday, July 5. 2011, at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, July 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Loyal. Rev. Daniel Zimmerman officiated. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery, Withee. Pallbearers were Terry Biddle, David Welzien, Jeff Meeker, Arnie Becker, Orville Schwartz and Dick Rhode.

 

Alan Russell Welzien, was born on March 19, 1923, in the town of Resburg, rural Thorp, the son of Emil and Grace 9nee Mock) Welzien. He was raised on the family farm and received his education at Resburg Grade School, and he graduated from Thorp High School in 1941. After completing his education, he went to Grand Rapids, Mich., where he was a sheet metal worker. He married Grace Biddle on Dec. 5, 1945, in Kent, Wash. He was a foreman at Libby Foods in Kent, before returning to Thorp in 1948. They moved to Loyal in 1949 and in 1950, he began working as an artificial inseminator for Tri-State Breeders. He retired in 1985 after 35 years with the company. He was a resident of the Clark County Health Care Center, Owen, for the past 20 months. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its dartball team. He had many interests, but especially enjoyed bowling, the Packers, sports and politics.

 

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Grace, Loyal; one daughter, Peggy (Alan) Rhode, Waukesha; two grandchildren, Dana (Chris) Mayne and Jay Rhode; two great-grandchildren, Brooks Mayne and Blake Mayne; and one niece and three nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clarence Welzien; and one sister, Leora Welzien, at birth.
