Witte, Herman Carl (25 November 1874 - 9 December 1963)

 

Herman Carl Witte, 89, of Granton, died Monday in Neillsville, following a long period of hospitalization.

 

Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 1:30 p.m. from the Zion Lutheran Church in Granton.  The Rev. F. C. Benecke will officiate, and burial will be made in Windfall Cemetery.

 

H. C. Witte was born in Gerkow, Germany, November 25, 1874, where he spent his childhood.  In 1887, at the age of 13 years he immigrated to America alone and located in Bellingham, Minn., where he worked in a dry goods business.  He was married to Louise Buschke of Lebanon, Wis., on June 10, 1897.  he continued in the dry goods business in Bellingham, Minn., and Mondovi until 1910, when he purchased a grocery and dry goods store in Granton, which he operated until his retirement in 1932.

 

In 1962 Mr. Witte was honored at the Granton Harvest Festival as the oldest resident and business man living in Granton.

 

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Granton and took an active interest in church affairs.

 

Mr. Witte is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Renata Rounsville, of Minneapolis; three sons, Erhart of Granton, Hubert of Frederic, and Alex of Raine, and by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

Pallbearers  will be: Dan Garbisch, Lloyd Spry, Ray Nickel, Richard Hillert, Walter Schlinsog and Walter Trimberger.
