Sorensen, Axel (6 JUL 1884 - 4 JUL 1961)

Funeral services were held at 2:00 o’clock this afternoon from the Nazareth Lutheran Church at Withee.  The final rites will be read by Rev. Byrl Knudsen, with burial to be made in the parish cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Arnold Rasmussen, Sam Andersen, Pete Christophersen, Alfred Frost, Emil H. Hansen and Christ Frost.  Carrying the floral offerings were Mesdames Alfred Frost, Christ Frost, Emil Hansen, Arnold Rasmussen, Pete Christophersen and Miss Helga Andersen.

Mr. Sorensen had been active and in apparent good health up to a week previous to his death.  He was stricken while on a fishing trip Tuesday, June 27, by what was determined as a blood clot in the upper portion of his legs.  Treatment was first administered at the hospital in Stanley.  The next day he was transferred to Marshfield and as his condition worsened was taken to Wis. General Hospital in Madison, where he passed away at 8:30 a.m. July 4th, 1961.

Axel Sorensen was a prominent personality in this community, as well as throughout the county.  He had been a resident of the Withee (Clark Co., Wis.) area since 1900, when he came to this community with his parents.  He was born July 6, 1884, at Superior, Wis.  When the family first settled at Withee they farmed north of the village until 1928 at which time they purchased a fine farm in the Frenchtown area, which he farmed until 1945.

In late years he served as a sales representative for a large fertilizer company, in addition to being active in politics, having been a candidate for the office of assemblyman on the Democratic ticket in 1954; had served as chairman of the Clark County Democrats; commander of the American Legion; as a school board member and as vice chairman of the P.M.A.

The deceased, who just missed observing his 67th birthday anniversary by two days, was born July 6, 1894.  On June 23, 1920 he was united in marriage to his wife, the former Anne Madsen, who mourns his sudden passing in a ceremony performed at Withee.  Other mourners are a son, George, Withee; two daughters, Mrs. Einar (Alice) Anderson, Mauston, and Emily Sorensen, Sturdevant; two brothers, Sigured, Withee, and Ernest, LaGrange, Ill.; four sisters, Mrs. Nels (Betty) Nielsen, Mrs. K. (Thera) Hansen and Mrs. (Dagne) Almind, all of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. E. (Ellen) Hansen, Marine of St. Croix, Minn., and seven grandchildren.
