Schultz, Donald (Barn Fire - 1959)

A spectacular fire, of unknown origin, destroyed a large barn and most of the contents on the farm of Donald Schultz, 7 ½ miles north of Loyal on Sunday afternoon.

Smoke was observed by Loyal Police Chief Pat Duell and his family from a roadway a mile south of the place.  Upon driving by the farm, Chief Duell noted that no one was home so he proceeded to the next farmhouse where a phone was available to sound the alarm.

Upon his return to the barn Chief Duell noted that another man had stopped at the barn and all the cows had been led to safety.  A tractor was also removed before fire consumed the structure.  Lost in the blaze were a number of small pigs, quantities of hay and straw and several other pieces of machinery.

Although the Loyal Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene, little could be done to save the structure and they concentrated on saving the adjoining buildings.  It was not learned whether the loss was covered by insurance.  Schultz and his family were visiting in Colby at the time but returned to the scene while the blaze was in progress.

The livestock is being cared for at the nearby Earl Stowe farm until other arrangements can be made.
