Metcalf, James (3 February 1884 - 15 October 1964)

 

James Metcalf, 80, of Greenwood died of a heart attack at 11:340 a.m. last Thursday at his home.  He had been in poor health for the last two years.

 

He was born February 3, 1884, in Melrose, and as a young boy came with his parents to Clark County.  He received his education in the Melrose and Clark County schools.

 

His marriage to Clara Vollrath took placer October 20, 1907, at Hayward. They lived at Hayward until 1910, when they moved onto a farm 12 miles northwest of Greenwood.  In 1952 he retired and moved to the city of Greenwood. During the summer months he worked as a guide at a resort in Hayward for 10 years.

 

Mr. Metcalf was director of the Oakland School district, president and director of the Greenwood Milk Cooperative, a member of the Conservation Club and the Zion United Church of Christ.

 

Survi8ving are his wife; three sons, LeRoy Metcalf of Greenwood, Everett Metcalf of Brooking, S. D., and Dale Metcalf of Random Lake; a daughter, Mrs. Ben (Bertha) Dallman of Greenwood; two brothers, Freeman Metcalf and William Metcalf of Hayward; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Zion United Church in Greenwood. The Rev. Orval Egbert officiated, and burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Funeral services for James Metcalf were held from Zion United Church. The Rev. Orval Egbert officiated. Burial was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Theodore Braun, Hubert Horn, Lloyd Longridge, George Stark, Clarence Verhulst and Otto Voie.

 

During the services Miss Nettie Miller sang, "Beyond the Sunset" and "God’s Tomorrow" accompanied by Mrs. Daniel Olson on the organ.

 

Relatives attending were: Mr. and Mrs. Everett Metcalf of Brookings, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Metcalf of Random Lake; Col. Bernard Vollrath of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. William Gerlach of Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Groenke and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Metcalf of Minneapolis; Miss Carol Metcalf of Marshfield; Mr. and Mrs. William Metcalf, Freeman Metcalf, Mrs. Ida Metcalf, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Metcalf, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Metcalf, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Cook, Mrs. Paul Helchel, Irene Metcalf, Ralph Metcalf and son, David, all of Hayward; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Metcalf and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Speich of Eau Claire; Gary Speich of Osseo; Mr. and Mrs. William Rogers and family of Red Granite; Mrs. Lyman John of New London.

 

Other relatives and friends were from Hayward, Random Lake, Eau Claire, New London, Neillsville, Osseo, Red Granite, Chippewa Falls, Colby, Buffalo City, Thorp, Withee, and Greenwood; Brookings, S. D.; Minneapolis, Minn.; and Detroit, Mich.
