Humbird Local Happenings (8 January 1944)

 

Miss Benita Drager, of St. Paul, spent the week end at the Ernest Duerkop home.

 

Mrs. Bertha Stallard spent New Years in Altoona with Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Shute.

 

Repot from McClellan Field, Calif., is that Manley C. Walker of the air service command, now has been advanced to first class private.  His work is with the crew keeping the planes in first class maintenance.

 

Marvin Duerkop and wife, of Alma, came and spent Monday and Tuesday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Duerkop.

 

Ted Green and family of West Allis spent New Years week end in the village.

 

With the Fifth Army in Italy - Private First Class George G. Matti, son of Mrs. Nellie Matti, has been promoted to Corporal.  He is serving with the 36th "Texas" Division of the Fifth Army in Italy.

 

Jacob Matti returned Thursday evening from a holiday visit with relatives and friends in Beloit.

 

Ivan Duerkop spent the holidays in St. Paul.

 

Fred Greub, of Davis, Ill., who has been staying with his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Greub, Sr., had an operation on one of his eyes at an Eau Claire hospital last of the week.  He went to Eau Claire Wednesday to have the stitches removed.

 

Legion Notice - The post will meet at the hall next Monday evening, Jan. 10.

 

A picnic supper was enjoyed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Winscher, by George Galster and family, Wendell Galster and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Kelsh and daughter, Esther Laffe, Gottlieb Winscher, and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Galster and family.

 

The 4th War Loan is upon us.  The Clark County War Finance committee has compiled a table of quotas for the several towns, villages and cities, allotting to Mentor, including the village of Humbird, $9,985, a per capita bond purchase of about $14.  The total quota for the county on the 4th War Loan is $518,400.

 

Many items of news are unavoidably omitted this week.
