County Mourns Fallen Firefighter (7 March 2012)

By Tony Opelt - The Historic Abbotsford Theatre was engulfed in flames at noon Sunday, March 4.  Local firefighters responded to the scene but requested help from Colby, Owen-Withee, Curtiss and Dorchester.

During the initial fire suppression efforts, the roof collapsed, trapping three firefighters.  As a result, firefighter, Jamison Kampmeyer, 34, of Colby suffered a fatal injury.  Kampmeyer was a Colby Volunteer Firefighter and Marathon County Sheriff deputy.

The other trapped firefighters were rescued, treated and released late Sunday, along with additional firefighters who received minor injuries from falling debris.

A press conference was held at Noon Monday, March 5. The Abbotsford Fire Chief explained the events of Sunday’s blaze and assured the other firefighters are doing well. Governor Scott Walker was present at the conference. The local firefighters joined him in expressing their condolences to Kampmeyer’s wife and three children.

The origin and cause of the fire is still unknown. The investigation continues.
