Zerbel, Donald Paul (5 February 1932 - 2 April 2012) With Flag

Donald Paul Zerbel, 80, of Black River Falls passed away Monday, April 2, 2012, under the care of Black River Memorial Hospital Hospice after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Don was born Feb. 5, 1932, in Mentor Township to Paul and Frieda (Schenk) Zerbel.  He was raised on a dairy farm and graduated from Humbird High School in 1949. After serving in the army during the Korean War, Don and his brother Art ran the Zerbel Feed store while working the family farm.  In 1959, he and Betty (Ehlert) Zerbel were married, spending 52 years together. They made their home and raised their family in Humbird until their retirement.

Don played baseball and was a lifetime fan of the sport.  During his free time, you could find Don helping his neighbors, caring for his garden and lawn and feeding the numerous birds and animals of the area.  He always enjoyed a good game of cards, fishing and the annual deer hunting season. He was devoted to his family and friends and loves spending special time with his grandchildren.

Don is survived by his loving wife Betty; three sisters, Alma Kaufman of Altoona, Alice Schweinler of Mauston, Doris (John) Kleckner of Lancaster; a son Michael (Deborah) Zerbel of Green Bay; a daughter Sheri (Thomas) Kling of La Crescent, MN; four grandchildren, Jarrod, Ryan, Samantha and Kyle; and numerous family members and friends.  He was preceded in death by his brothers Arthur and Herman.

A memorial funeral service was held Thursday, April 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Buswell Funeral Home, 106 S Second Street, Black River Falls, with Pastor Stork officiating.  Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of services.  According to his wishes, Don has been cremated.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Black River Memorial Hospital Hospice Black River Falls, WI 54615 or St. John’s Lutheran Church Building Fund, Black River Falls, WI 54615.
