Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Schaefer are the parents of a son born on March 20, 1977 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. He weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 201/2 inches long. They named him Jeremy John.

He joins three sisters, Christine 16, Cindy 15, and Judy 13.

Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Schaefer and Mrs. Hilda Kampien, Stratford.

St. Mary’s eighth grade graduates received their diplomas on Sunday at St. Mary‘s Catholic Church at the 9:30 mass, with Rev. Diedrich and Rev. Rushman officiating.

Graduates include: Theresa Fechelm, Margie Kunze, Philip Kunze, Leslie Huebner, Donna Hedler, Dawn Kilty, Pamela Stange, Carolyn Roth, Terrie Pietrowski, Mary Poster, Mary Young, Tammy Bauer, Amy Hauser, Susan Jochimsen, Lyle Hainzlsperger, Trudy Robida, Douglas Webb, Laura Seidel, Russell Hamus, Carol Mohan, Gary Heeg, Lori Goessl, Craig Gutenberger, Lori Sterzinger, Gary Sterzinger, Lisa Young, Kevin Krebsbach, Brad Baumgartner, Linda Bartnik and David Lueddecke.

Tuesday morning the graduation breakfast was held.

A reception and supper were held after the service at the Willner’s and Jim, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Beyerl and family, Mrs. Nancy Kroening and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rachu and family as guests.

Awards were presented in many categories Tuesday night in the Colby High School Little Theatre for graduating seniors. Martin Haavisto, guidance counselor, presented $200 UW-Marshfield scholarships to Brian Boettcher, Steve Weber, Penny Hinke and Carrie Pfefferkorn. Fred Caskey was honored by the students for his dedication and unending help to all students in the school system.

Dr. Charles Graham, president of St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota, delivered the commencement address at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, Sunday, May 22, 1977, in the Melvin Wall Amphitheatre.

Three area students received their degrees at that time.

They were Daniel J. Bender, Route 1, Colby, received a bachelor of science in agricultural education, with a major in agriculture education and a minor in animal science.

Cynthia Jicinsky, Route 1, Abbotsford, received a bachelor of science in secondary education, with a major in English and a minor in Spanish. Miss Jicinsky graduated with honorable mention awarded to students whose honor point ration for the last two years of study was 3.25 or better.

Jan Schilling, Pine Street, Abbotsford, received a bachelor’s of science degree with a major in biology and minors in chemistry and animal science. She was awarded special honors granted to graduates with a 3.75 honor point ration for the last two years of study.

Included in the group were Mrs. Caroline Tischendorf, Mrs. Frances Jantsch, Mrs. Lucy Schopper, Mrs. Stella Zaborowski, Mrs. Minnie Geber, Mrs. Rose Plockelman, Mrs. Anna Stoiber, Mrs. Hattie Schumacher, Mrs. Joe Weber, Mrs. Julia Bittner and Mrs. Sophie Goessel.

Firnstahl, Lillian (3 Feb 1899 – 20 May 1977)

Funeral services were held Monday, May 23, 1977 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Colby, for Mrs. Lillian Firnstahl, age 78, Colby.

Officiating at the 11 a.m. services was the Rev. Francis Rushman. Burial followed in the parish cemetery. Rux-Lulloff Funeral Home, Colby, was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Firnstahl passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield on Friday, May 20, 1977.

The former Lillian Lystad was born February 3, 1899 in Verndale, Minnesota. She married I. M. Firnstahl on October 26, 1920 at Sauk, Minnesota.

The couple farmed in the Colby area until 1933. They then were in the retail business for 11 years before retiring in Colby.

Mrs. Firnstahl was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Christian Mother’s group, and a former officer of the group, a member of the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Colby Senior Citizens Club.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Norman Firnstahl, Mallorca, Spain, Jerry H. Firnstahl, Jefferson, and Paul P. Firnstahl, Colby, and one daughter, Mrs. Angus (Virginia) Lamont, Colby, 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. William (Tracy) Thompson, Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

News: Abbotsford – Hawks-Kattre Expands (1977)

The business of Hawks-Kattre Enterprises Inc., 314 N. Fourth Street, Abbotsford, is expanding according to Robert Hawks and Clayton Kattre, partners in the corporation. Hawks-Kattre Enterprises has recently become the management and development corporation for great Midwest Builders, Contractor Unlimited, and Hawks-Kattre Realty Inc. Each business has its own board of directors and will have its own president and general manager, but, according to Kattre, will remain under the control of Hawks-Kattre Enterprises.

Greater Midwest Builders will build custom energy structures which includes homes, motels and apartments. Contractors Unlimited will contract for masonry work, such as sidewalks and driveways, do excavation, plumbing and heating work. The realty end of the business will buy and sell farms, residential and commercial land and buildings. The company will continue to sell insurance, as in the past.

Peter Brockhaus has been hired as the architectural designer and draftsman for Great Medwist. Kattre said an announcement would be made in the near future to the other new employees, when all assignments have been completed.
