The familiar blue Owen Police car was demolished when it was rammed following Halloween night, at about 3::0 a.m. Wednesday morning, November 1, 1978, when it was responding to a call for assistance from the Loyal Police officer, Dick Edwards.

Two Loyal men appeared before Judge Michael Brennan on Saturday morning, November 2th, in connection with the incident that happened near the City of Loyal.

Douglas Cox, 22, was charge with three counts, causing bodily harm to Loyal Police officer Dick Edwards; intentionally causing damage to the Owen police car, and endangering the safety of Owen officer Larry Crooks, who was driving the Owen police car at the time of the incident.

Bruce Faude and Jeanette De Buhr were married on Friday, October 20, 1978 at McHenry, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Harley Faude, Larry Faude, Cindy Eckstrom, Mrs. Kenny LaRack, Michelle and David attended the wedding.

Bruce attended the Owen-Withee Schools. His parents lived at Route 1, Lublin before moving to Perkinstown.

The Wayne Lindberg home in Abbotsford, Wisconsin was the setting for a wedding ceremony on Saturday, October 21, 1978 that united Loraine Stowe of Owen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Anger of Owen, and Robert W. Arndt of Rural Route Withee, son of Mrs. Frank Arndt, in marriage Robert Ruprich officiated at the ceremony.

The bride wore a navy and white dress, and carried a white and blue corsage. Mrs. Wayne Lindberg of Abbotsford was her bridesmaid, and she wore a light blue suit and wore a pink and white corsage.

The groom’s best man was Wayne Lindberg of Abbotsford.

A dinner was held for the couple at 4:30 p.m. and a reception at 8:00 p.m. in the Wayne Lindberg home. The home was decorated with navy, pink and white.

Guests came from Withee, Owen, Dorchester, Abbotsford, Milwaukee, Greenwood, Stanley, Loyal, Thorp and Neillsville.

The couple who went to Southern Wisconsin for a few days on their honeymoon will reside at Rural Route 2, Withee. The groom is a farm laborer on the Mr. and Mrs. Mel Koplitz farm.

Edward M. Laneville, 76, Phoenix, Arizona, died Wednesday, November 1, 1978 at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix. He was a former Withee resident.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 4 at Maurina Funeral Home in Owen, with burial in Riverside Cemetery at Withee. The Rev. Lloyd Yaggie, pastor of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Withee, officiated.

He was born on September 6, 1902 in Withee. He operated a barber shop in Withee and was postmaster from 1934 – 1944. He served as rural mail carrier until 1947, when he moved to Brodhead, where he owned and operated a shoe store until 1971, when he moved to Phoenix.

On May 26, 1930 he married Alice Miller at Withee. She survives.

Oher survivors include one son, Alan of Phoenix; two brothers, John of Dodgeville and Fred of Albuquerque, N.M.; four sisters, Mrs. Elsie McAdam of Withee, Mrs. Harold (Dorothy) Twait of Evansville, Mrs. Edith Schuster of Stratford, Virginia, and Mrs. Emma Martin of Madison; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, James, a sister and a brother.

Richard Sorenson, son of Harold and Louise Sorenson of Owen, has joined Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at the UW-Eau Claire campus.

Tau Kappa Epsilon is the world’s largest college general fraternity with over 300 active chapters on college and university campuses in the United States and Canada.

In addition to social development, TKE offers programming and activities in management, leadership, training, public service, as well as various regional and international leadership conferences.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Herington at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Wednesday, October 11, 1978, weighing 7 pounds, 1 ounce, and was 21 inches long. She was welcomed home by two sisters, Kari and Tina.

Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Woik, Owen, and paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harley Herington, Withee.

Weber, Lorene Mae (9 December 1928 – 15 December 2023)

Lorena Mae Weber, 95, of Neillsville, died Friday, December 15, 2023, at the Neillsville Retirement Community in Neillsville.

Lorena Mae Griffin was born on December 9, 1928, in Flint, MI, the daughter of William and Leah (Ogden) Griffin. She graduated from Dye High School in Flint in 1946, and then was united in marriage to Alexander Weber on May 23, 1947, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Flint, MI. After they were married, Mae stayed home and raised their family. When the children were older, she went to work, for many years, as a sales clerk in the fabric department of Hudson's Department Store. Her husband, Alexander, died in 2005, and Mae moved to Neillsville in 2018 after the death of her son, Mark.


Mae was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Durand, MI, until moving to Neillsville. She then became of member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mae loved her Savior, and she showed that to her children and grandchildren.

She loved to travel and had visited 49 of the 50 states. The only state she didn't get to visit was little New Jersey. She loved chocolate and sewing. She was a great seamstress, making many of her and her family's clothes. She was a terrific baker and she loved cooking. In her younger years, dinner with her family was always at her house every Sunday.


She is survived by six children, Marlene Brown of Swartz Creek, MI, Sharon (Melvin) Nemitz of Neillsville, Leah Vankeuern of Grand Blanc, Teresa (Myron) Muter of Port Hope, MI. Bill (Jenny) Weber of Durand, MI, John (Michelle) Weber of Swartz Creek, MI, and Mae is further survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alexander, her son, Mark, and infant grandson, a great grandson, and a son-in-law, Dave Brown.

Mae's family would like to thank Pastor Biebert for his devotions with her. Betty Nemitz for visiting Mae and decorating her room. Effie Sytsma for the friendship she showed Mae. Tammy and her staff at the Neillsville Retirement Community and Compassus Hospice Care for the wonderful care they provided.


Funeral services for Mae will be held at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville. Pastor Timothy Biebert will officiate. Music will be provided by Judy Trunkel, organist. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the church.
