OBITUARY OF MRS. ALLEN CURTIS

Funeral services for Mrs. Caroline Shanks Curtis, wife of Rev. A.L. Curtis fo Aberdeen, were held at Castlewood Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church, with Dr. S. W. Keck of Huron officiating. Rev. Martin Hyink of the local Presbyterian church assisted at the services, and also Rev. Trickey of Watertown, also Rev. Ross of Estelline and Rev. Smith of Clear Lake. Interment was made in the Castlewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Curtis died Tuesday morning, April 9th, 1935, at Aberdeen after being ill for many months.

A very large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the services, and floral offerings were profuse and beautiful as tokens of the esteem in chichi, Mrs. Curtis was held.

Pall bearers were Wm. Reid, C. N. Halvorson, Rowe Ching, Sam Schoenfield, Ed White and J. L. Pommer.

Caroline Shanks was born Aug. 15, 1878, at West Salem, near La Crosse, Wis. Her mother passed away while Caroline was still young, and the baby was reared by relatives near Greenwood, Clark County, Wis., where she later received her grade and high school education.

She came to Castlewood when about eighteen to live with an uncle. Here she taught school for several years, later being employed in the First National Bank.

She was married to Allen L. Curtis at Peterboro, Ontario on May 26, 1909, at the home of her sister. Their wedding journey was made to Mr. Curtis first parish at Estelline, S.D. Three years later they moved to Castlewood and here they resided for ten years while Mr. Curtis was engaged in the banking business.

The next four years were spent at Lake Preston and Chamberlain. On May 1, 1927 they moved to Aberdeen, where they had resided ever since.

Mrs. Curtis was a member of the Congregational Church, the Eastern Star and the Zenaida Club.

Survivors include her widower an only child, Ruth, who is a first year student at Yankton College one brother and three sisters, Albert Shanks of Greenwood, Wis., Mrs. Viola Smith of Gilman, Wis., Mrs. Mary Meek of Wibeaux, Mont., and Mrs. Margaret Tobin of Peterboro, Ontario.

Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Max Gayes, High Smith, Misses Grace and Louis Sawyer, all of Chicago Mrs. Jack Smith of Gilman, Wis. Mr. and Mrs. Meek of Wibeaux, Mont Mr. and Mrs. Millard Stndsjord, Mrs. Marc Cleworht, Mrs. Garvin and sister, Mrs. Clyde Courtright, all of Aberdeen Rev. Trickey, Mr. and Mrs. Ame Adams, Mrs. Robt. Shanks, Bert Mrogan, Grant Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Skinner, all of Watertown Miss Anne Curtis, Mount Vernon, Wash.
