Drumm, Donald Robert (1927 - 2001)


Donald Drumm, 74, Willard, Clark Count, died on Saturday, April 28, 2001, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville. The Rev. Elden Simonson officiated. Interment was in the Northern Wisconsin Veteran Memorial Cemetery, Spooner.


Donald Robert Drumm was born on Jan. 1, 1927, in Dupont, to William and Emma (nee O'Connor) Drumm. He attended school in Edgar and then enlisted into the U.S. Navy on June 30, 1944. He married Alvina Esther Wiegert on July 11, 1948, in Fond du Lac. His career in the Navy placed him and his family in many cities throughout the U.S. He was stationed in Benton Harbor, Mich. Annapolis, Md. Newport, R.I. Quanset Point, R.I. and Charleston, S.C. He served aboard the USS John Paul Jones, The USS Robert L. Wilson, The USS Havre, the USS Jeffers (the first major naval vessel in Tokyo Bay during World War II), the USS Gwin, and the USS Topeka as a telegraph operator. His tour of duty included serving in World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and wintering in the Antarctic. During his service, he obtained many decorations including the American Area Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon, two Stars, and the World War II Victory Ribbon, to name a few. He retired from active duty in the Navy on Nov. 20, 1970, and in Sept. 1975, they moved to Willard. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, the Wallis-Hinker American Legion Post 238, Greenwood, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.


Survivors include his wife, Alvina Drumm, Willard two daughters, Denise Briggs, Memphis, Tenn., and Carol Mazoroal, New Orleans, La. two granddaughters, Kelly K. Brown, Chippewa Falls, and Jennifer Briggs, Memphis, Tenn. one sister, Margaret Goertz, Schofield and one sister-in-law, Lucille Drumm.


He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Bill, Roy, Hardy, Howard, and Farrand.


The Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville, assisted the family with arrangements.
