Steiner, Alice Mildred (1899 - 1981)
 

Services for Alice Mildred (Cowles) Steiner, 82, of 207 S. Main St., Loyal, Clark County, who died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1981 at Neillsville Memorial Hospital, were held Sunday, Aug. 23, at Rinka Funeral Home, Loyal. The Rev. Charles strong of the United Methodist Church, Spencer, officiated, and burial was held at the Loyal Cemetery.


Alice Mildred Cowles was born Feb. 5, 1899, at Leroy, Wis., the daughter of Edward M. Cowles and Hattie (McLean) Cowles. She attended high school at Oakfield, graduated from Stevens Point Normal School in 1918, and taught home economics.


On Aug. 4, 1918, she married Jacob Robert Steiner of Lomira. From 1920-1926, she was postmistress at South Byron. In 1927, the couple moved to Loyal, where she became part owner of The Loyal Tribune. She taught in various Clark County rural schools, and at Spencer High School she was the home economics teacher for five years before retirement in 1961.


She was a member of the Loyal United Methodist Church, a former organist there, and secretary of the Sunday school.


Mr. and Mrs. Steiner celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a reception for friends and relatives in 1978.


She is survived by her husband and a son, Dr. Roger Jacob Steiner, professor at the University of Delaware, Newark, Del., and daughter-in-law, Kathryn Posey Steiner, formerly of Lititz, Pa., and their two children, David Posey Steiner and Andrew Posey Steiner.

 Other survivors include her brother, Lawrence Victor Cowles, Stevens Point, and sister-in-law, Loretta Bannach Cowles, a foster brother, Edward Blank, South Byron, and his wife Margaret, who is also her cousin, and the spouse of two deceased brothers Edith Granger Cowles, former wife of Alfred Charles Cowles, Roberts, and Grace DeYoung Cowles Obenauer, former wife of Arthur William Cowles, South Byron.


Pallbearers were her two grandchildren, her foster brother, her husband's brother-in-law, Joseph C. Kunel, Lomira, and two nephews, David William Steiner, Prark Falls and Thomas Walls Steiner, Menomonee Falls.
